Jackets, Coats and Pants Here you will find an offering of garments. There are various degrees of finishing that can be done to meet various customer requirements. Jackets are available in a range from vegetable dyed jean with hand sewn button holes and top stitching executed in logwood dyed thread to jackets of naturally colored fleece with machine top stitching. The garments have two categories, Gold Label and Silver Label. Gold Label These garments have a higher degree of hand work both inside and out and are often made of the more expensive fabrics. If hand top stitching is used it is usually done in logwood dyed thread. Silver Label These garments typically have less hand work and are made of less expensive fabrics. They are what may be a "standard line", but the are not an economy line. The Silver line is certainly well above average of those being offered in the business. These garments have hand sewn button holes and are usually machine top stitched ( there are many examples of machine top stitched original garments). The stock garments are most often Silver Label. The label does not necessarily indicate if machine sewing is used or not. A gold label reproduction of an original garment with machine top stitching will of course have machine top stitching. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the fabrics page. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Available Jacket And Coat Styles Richmond Depot Type I- Six piece body, two piece sleeves, nonbuttoning beltloops, nonbuttoning shoulder straps, typically a nine button closure with a button affixed through each shoulder strap. They are lined in cotton osnaburg and have an inside pocket. Trimmed with branch of service colored tape hand sewn on the collar, the epaulets, and in an inverted "V" pattern on the cuffs. These jackets seem to have been produced by the Richmond Clothing Bureau primarily for the A.N.V. These are the "early war" jackets that were produced at least as early as Feb. 1862. Richmond Depot Type II- Same as the type I, but without trim. These jackets seem to have been in production from the Spring of 1862 to mid-1864. They are seen in photographs in use through to the end of the war. Richmond Depot Type III-Same as the type II but without beltloops and shoulder straps. These jackets seem to have been in production and use in 1864 and 1865 and are typically made of blue-gray kersey (a.k.a. army cloth). N.C. Depot- Four piece body with one piece sleeves. Lined in osnaburg with two inside pockets. Six button front. These jackets were produced by the State of N.C. primarily for use by N.C. troops. Also issued to other troops. N.C. Sack Coat (Fatigue Blouse) - Four piece body with two piece sleeves. Extends to mid thigh. Six button front. Trimmed with strips of colored cloth sewn flat to the shoulders of the coat. A copy per the original with wide inside facings and extensive handwork is available as well as a lined version that deletes the need for handwork. Four Button Sack- Four piece body with two piece sleeve. Four button front. Outside pocket. Although the source is not clear, these coats seem to be linked to the A.N.V. in the last half of the war. Commutation Jacket- This term encompasses any jacket worn by a soldier, but not issued to him through the government. Some have outside pockets, some have beltloops, some have shoulder straps. Button count varies. Various trim can be used.
